Since 1976, the Master of Public Affairs (MPA) degree has been preparing students for professional positions in public service. Our graduates have found meaningful careers in local, state, & federal agencies; nonprofit agencies & voluntary associations; legislative staff positions; colleges & universities; and consulting firms & contract agencies.
The mission of the Master of Public Affairs (MPA) program offered by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is to:
Provide a stimulating and challenging education enabling a diverse student body to develop public values and master essential knowledge, competencies, and skills within a supportive and cooperative community;
Prepare pre-service students for leadership and professional positions in public service;
Provide education to in-service students that will lead to their development and career advancement as leaders, professionals, and managers;
Contribute to the fields of public policy, public administration, and nonprofit management through scholarly and applied research, publications, and professional service;
Serve the greater Piedmont Triad area through community-engaged scholarship, interns, graduates, and outreach activities that enhance the performance of local government and nonprofit organizations.
Inclusive Excellence
Along with the University, the UNCG MPA program is committed to Inclusive Excellence. We recognize the importance inclusion as a part of its moral obligation to our students, our alumni, and our program, thus we strive to act purposefully to thwart exclusive practices.
The University shall continue to ensure that diverse persons of any background, from North Carolina and beyond, are invited, included, and treated equally.
Several sources of financial assistance are offered to MPA graduate students:
Graduate Assistantships
The Department of Political Science offers graduate assistantships to a limited number of full-time graduate students. Such students must take at least 6 graduate credits and should not have any other employment. Application for assistantships is made by letter to the Graduate Director, Department of Political Science, UNCG. Students interested in an assistantship for the fall should apply by March 15.
NCCCMA Scholarship
A scholarship for a full-time student interested in a city or county management career is awarded annually by the North Carolina City and County Management Association.
Next Generation Graduate Award
This scholarship is funded by our MPA Alumni and is awarded each semester; awards are based on academic record, financial need, and other considerations relevant to public affairs and administration.
New Annie Parham Scholarship for Local Government Management Students
A scholarship awarded to a part-time or full-time student who plans to pursue a local government career. Priority will be given to current employees working in city or county government.
Cemala Foundation Fellowship
ELIGIBILITY: Up to $11,000 per year for a full-time student who works 10 hours a week for a local nonprofit organization and assists with the MPA program.
May Davidson Scholarship
Due to the generosity of a UNCG graduate, the program is able to award this scholarship each semester; awards are based on academic record, financial need, and other considerations relevant to public affairs and administration.
The University maintains an Office of Financial Aid, and students needing financial assistance (other than assistantships) should contact this office for work-study assistance and student loans.
All students are expected to be able to integrate their academic and practical experiences to prepare themselves for a career in public service. Students who have worked for at least one year in a full-time professional position in a public or nonprofit agency may apply to the Graduate Director for a waiver of the internship requirement (see waiver form in Appendix B).
Students not having approved prior work experience will be required to take Applied Policy Research (PSC 694) or complete a supervised internship (PSC 695) in a public or nonprofit agency for 3-6 credits, depending on the duration of the placement, together with a directed field study (PSC 696). Students with prior work who desire experience in a new area of public affairs may choose to complete an applied policy analysis or internship as well.
As a professional internship the placement is carefully designed and closely supervised, it is intended to supplement, not replace, coursework. Students may do their internship during or after (preferred) they have completed 4 graduate courses (12 credit hours), including PSC 600, 601, 602 and 603 others. Normally the internships are full-time, paid positions for a period of approximately 10-12 weeks during the summer between the first and second year. However, other arrangements can be made if necessary. The three credit hours for the applied policy research and the directed study count toward the 36 hours required for the degree; the internship credits do not. (See Appendix C for complete requirements). Students are expected to locate their own internships with the assistance of the Graduate Director. Recent interns have been placed with the following agencies: United Way of Greater Greensboro; Greensboro Housing Coalition; City of Greensboro; Greensboro Housing Authority; City of Winston-Salem; City of Burlington; Partners Ending Homelessness; The Servant Center; and National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ).

The MPA Program provides assistance for students in their job search. Advising for MPA students is related to career objectives, and the campus Career Services Center offers resume writing and interviewing assistance. For preservice students, the internship is designed to provide experience relevant to the type of employment desired after graduation. The program circulates the resumes of graduates seeking employment and advises them as they contact potential employers.
The program’s placement rate for the last two years is over 90%, which means that almost all of the graduates reported a job placement within 6 months of graduation. The largest percentage found positions in local governments or nonprofit agencies in North Carolina. See table below for a sample of the positions of individuals who graduated in the past five years. NOTE: These graduates obtained these jobs prior to or within 9 months after graduation.
