The Nonprofit Management Certificate – Online and On Campus
Earn a graduate certificate in 1-2 years while learning nonprofit management skills, including fundraising, grant writing, strategic planning, and budgeting. It’s offered online and on campus.

THEN…the nonprofit management certificate program at UNCG may be for you!
These are the features of this certificate program:
- 15 credit hours of course work that can be completed within a year’s time or longer, as your schedule allows
- classes offered online and on campus (evening and Saturday)
- excellent faculty, many with experience in the nonprofit sector
- small classes (15-25 students)
- a mix of three-credit and one-credit courses, with some required and some elective
- interesting and rigorous practical assignments
Curriculum (15 hours)
The curriculum should prepare all students to understand:
- the nonprofit sector and its political and legal status;
- methods of resource development and management;
- specific knowledge and skills needed in nonprofit management.
Required Core Courses: (9 hours)
- Nonprofit Management and Leadership (3 hrs.)*
- Philanthropy and Resource Development (3 hrs.)*
- Nonprofit Budgeting & Financial Management (3 hrs.)*
Choice: Three of these one-hour courses in the Topics in Public Affairs offerings (3 hours)
- Marketing for Public and Nonprofit Agencies (1 hr.)*
- Strategic Planning (1 hr.)*
- Grantwriting (1 hr.)*
- Nonprofit Law (1 hr.)
- Volunteer Management (1 hr.)*

Electives:
- Human Resource Development & Performance Management OR 3 one-hour courses OR a course in the MPA program offerings or another approved course in another graduate program
Students will also be required to develop a professional portfolio of their course projects and materials to demonstrate their proficiency in nonprofit work.
The required and recommended courses are offered in coordination with the nonprofit management concentration in the Master of Public Affairs program.
Admission:
The following must be submitted to the Graduate School by July 1(fall); November 15 (spring), or April 1 (summer):
- an application form (see the Graduate School website: https://gradapply.uncg.edu/apply/
- all transcripts (bachelor’s and/or master’s degree) from a regionally accredited colleges or universities
- Nonprofit Management Certificate Supplemental: Your personal statement about your career and educational goals
- three letters of recommendation
- a resume
No test is required.
FINANCIAL AID: Loans are available for this Certificate program for eligible students enrolling in at least 5 hours of course work each semester at the 500 level or above. (See Financial Aid). Click here to estimate your bill.
Relationship to the MPA Program
This program allows students without an MPA degree who enroll in the certificate program to apply to the MPA program, and receive 12 hours of credit toward the degree. However, satisfactory completion of the certificate program does not guarantee admission to the MPA program. All other admission criteria, including transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation and a supplemental application would have to be completed by the applicant and reviewed by the faculty. Admitted students would have to complete the MPA degree within five years from the beginning of the certificate enrollment to the completion of the degree.
