Human Rights Film Series:                                           The Look of Silence

Thursday, November 10, 2016, 6:30 pm | 120 School of Education Building

 

This Academy-award nominee provides a survivor’s intimate encounter with perpetrators of Indonesia’s 1965-66 anti-communist genocide and the legacy of fear that remains.

The Look of Silence is the final film to be shown this fall in the Human Rights Series. It will begin at 6:30pm in Room 120 School of Education Building, with convenient parking in the Walker and Oakland Parking Decks.

A reception and refreshments follow the film and subsequent discussion.

The series is free and open to the public

Human Rights Film Series:

 Pray The Devil  Back to Hell

Thursday, October 20, 2016, 6:30 pm | 120 School of Education Building

This documentary features a coalition of Muslim and Christian women who work for peace and democratic elections in Liberia following its civil war.

A post-film discussion will be facilitated by UNCG professor Bob Griffiths.

Pray the Devil Back to Hell is the third of four award-winning films to be shown this fall in the Human Rights Series. All films will begin at 6:30pm in Room 120 School of Education Building, with convenient parking in the Walker and Oakwood Parking Decks. The final film in the series will be The Look of Silence (November 10).

Dr. David Holian wins Teaching Excellence Award

CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. David Holian for being selected to receive the senior faculty Teaching Excellence Award of the College of Arts and Sciences this year. Dr. Jerry Pubantz, along with a professor from High Point University, on WXII Channel 12’s weekly news program, Chronicle with Cameron Kent. Undergraduate Research Awards Winners for 2015-2016

Amarandi Barret is working with Professor Greg McAvoy on a research project entitled “The Role of Race and Income in Community Environmental Protection” Amarandi received an award of $1,500 from the Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creativity Office to work on this project that focuses on a long-standing concern among scholars of environmental policy, the differential impact that environmental risks pose to those living in communities with a high percent of racial minorities or those living in poverty.

Sean Norton has received the Globally Engaged Undergraduate Research and Creativity Award. Sean Norton and faculty mentor Dr. Crowther are currently working on a project titled “Caught Between: Transnistria’s Separatist Conflict the Regional Context.” This project will evaluate the shift in the Transnistrian separatist conflict that has occurred as a consequence of the current crisis in Russian-Ukrainian relations. Transnistria a non-recognized separatist region bordering Ukraine to the east and the Republic of Moldova to the west.  It emerged as a consequence of the break-up of the USSR.
